NEW COMMUNITY CENTER, LIBRARY PROMISE TO IMPROVE FAMILIES’ LIVES

This past fall, 135 people celebrated the grand opening of a new library and state of the art community center at Mercy Housing’s Crestview Village in LaVista, Neb. Among those in attendance was LaVista city council member, Brenda Carlisle, who congratulated the efforts of Mercy Housing and our partners to improve the lives of our residents through innovative, program-enriched housing.

Renovations were made possible by a $1,000,000 grant from Catholic Health Charities (CHI), and underwritten by Alegent Health. CHI and Alegent have been long time partners in caring for the residents that we serve in Nebraska, and we are grateful for their generous support.

Guests and event attendees were treated to tours of Crestview’s new facility by the property’s Peace Pals, a Crestview Youth Group dedicated to community service and anti-bullying programs, sponsored by Crestview’s Resident Services.

The highlight of the evening, however, was the dedication of a library by Dr. Dee Acklie, Professor in the Education Department at the College of Saint Mary, and Advisory Council member for Mercy Housing in Nebraska.

“The College of Saint Mary has been a longtime supporter of Mercy Housing’s programs in Omaha. Dr. Acklie personally spearheaded efforts to gather books from various locations and organizations,” said Resident Services Manager, Shelly Voss. “Thanks to Dr. Acklie and her students, our new library is filled with new and gently used books for residents of all ages.”

Dr. Acklie was recognized at the grand opening celebration with a plaque in appreciation for her efforts. Additionally, a dedicational plaque now hangs in the new Crestview Library, honoring the Education Department at College of Saint Mary for what has become a vital partnership between the school and the Resident Services team at Crestview.
