Honoring the service of our veterans
Each November, we come together to celebrate the service of our veterans and the sacrifices they have made for our country. However, thousands of Veterans in America are homeless – in fact 1 in 5 homeless individuals in America are Veterans.
Mercy Housing strives to help residents like Leonard, a World War II Veteran who was living alone in a mobile home and struggling with grief following the death of his wife. Leonard was able to move into an affordable home at Mercy Housing Lakefront’s Countryside Senior Apartments.
Mercy Housing Lakefront’s Countryside Senior Apartments provides 70 units of housing for the senior community in Countryside, Illinois. Countryside is just one of many Mercy Housing properties that serves our Veteran community. Many of our properties have apartments specifically designated for Veterans.
Now, Leonard not only calls his apartment “home,” he calls it “heaven.” He says he thrives in the community atmosphere of the building.
“I never want to leave this place,” he shared.
Another great example of Mercy Housing's work to serve those who have served our country is the groundbreaking for El Monte Veterans Apartments in El Monte, California. Mercy Housing partnered with the City of El Monte and New Directons on this state-of-the-art facility that is the first of its kind within the San Gabriel Valley and will include 40 studio apartments designed specifically to support homeless Veterans.
We hope you will join with us to honor our Veterans for their service and hope you will partner with us to end Veteran homelessness and make sure that all Veterans have access to the resources and support they've earned. We hope to provide the vibrant, affordable communities that they need to find stability so they can thrive.
