Jun 032,500 Miles of Hope
Bob Mullarkey is no ordinary senior. At age 62, he has been walking 25 miles a day to raise money for Mercy Housing and brings attention to homelessness and those who are less fortunate. May 10, marks day 100 and the last of his 2,500 mile walk-a-thon.
Why Mercy Housing?
At day 50, Bob hadn’t decided on which nonprofit would be the beneficiary of his walk-a-thon. After hearing about Mercy Housing, Bob decided that “all the boxes checked” and he would dedicate his 2,500 mile walk to raise money for Mercy Housing California residents and programs. Bob, with the help of his daughter, sent letters to 300 friends, relatives, and community members to alert them of his fundraising walk-a-thon for Mercy Housing. As of today, his efforts have raised almost $100,000 while building awareness for his cause and donations continuing to come in. Several folks have met Bob while he is walking and inspired to give after finding out about Mercy Housing and his efforts.
Walking the Talk
Each day Bob sets off before sunrise at 5:30 a.m. from his home in the foothills of Mount Diablo, and walks up the trail leading to Mt. Diablo. “It takes 8 ½ hours for me to complete the 25 miles … lots of time to meditate and prayer, books on tape. I’ve seen lots of nature along the way, wild boar, deer, cows. But he also emphasizes, “Hiking is just an end to a means. I knew I wanted to raise money for the poor and homeless. The charity I chose was Mercy Housing because they have hundreds of properties throughout California to serve low-income and previously homeless. And then to show people how invested I am in this I decided to walk 2,500 miles … to show people I was requesting donations of that I was invested in this project.”
Bob remarks, “I’m glad I had the time to pray and think about the plight of the poor and homeless. It’s in giving that we receive. I know I have given over the years, but I’ve received tenfold.”
Thank You Bob!
We thank Bob so much as he completes the last leg of his 2,500 miles for Mercy Housing residents. His compassion means the world to the people that call Mercy Housing home.
