A Blessing for The Hub at Sunnydale

In preparation for the grand opening of The Hub at Sunnydale, an interfaith blessing ceremony was held on September 25 to celebrate unity, diversity, and the vibrant community it serves. Representatives from Mercy Housing and faith traditions across San Francisco gathered for this momentous event, offering a preview of the incredible space that now connects and supports the Sunnydale and Visitacion Valley neighborhoods.

The ceremony featured heartfelt remarks from a variety of faith leaders, whose words highlighted the shared values of compassion, justice, and community. The joyful sounds of youth and adult choirs filled the air, creating an atmosphere of celebration and hope. Guests were treated to a traditional dragon dance, believed to bring good fortune, and a moving performance by Native American Tribal dancers, paying homage to the rich cultural heritage of the area.

Sunnydale: A Community Transformed

The revitalization of Sunnydale began five years ago with a mission to address displacement and create an inclusive, thriving neighborhood. Once the Sunnydale-Velasco public housing development, this area has transformed into a healthy, mixed-income community with affordable and market-rate homes. It now boasts new parks, a community garden, and the centerpiece of this transformation: The Hub.

The Hub is more than just a community center—it’s a space for residents to access vital onsite services, build connections, and create opportunities. Mercy Housing’s commitment to Sunnydale is rooted in the belief that investing in residents through comprehensive support leads to healthier, safer lives and brighter futures.

The interfaith blessing marks a significant milestone in the Sunnydale transformation, embodying the spirit of collaboration and unity that makes this community so unique.
