Aug 15Mercy Housing Opens 50 Homes for Disabled and Formerly Homeless Veterans
As a result of years of collaboration between Mercy Housing California and its partners, 50 disabled and/or previously homeless veterans now have a beautiful, new place to call home. Across the country, Mercy Housing is creating affordable homes like these for deserving people in our community thanks to the support and donations from people like you.
Places like Mather Veterans Village are made possible through the support of caring community members like you. Thank you for honoring America’s veterans, and all of the residents we serve, by providing them with the homes and care they deserve.
There are nearly 50,000 homeless veterans in the U.S., with more than 11,000 residing in California. Mather Veterans Village provides 50 of these heroes a place to live in dignity with the support they need to create stable lives.
The community, located on the former Mather Air Force Base, offers services designed specifically for veterans, including health care and wellness programs, veterans benefit claims assistance, substance abuse counseling, substance abuse support groups, employment services, social activities and more. These services are provided in partnership with the Veterans Resource Centers of America and Northern California Veterans Administration Medical Center, adjacent to Mather Veterans Village.
Three stories tall, it is a garden-style community, and includes 44 one-bedroom apartments and six two-bedroom apartments. A community hub, located in a repurposed, 1950s military building opposite the property, houses 3,500 square feet of meeting rooms, staff offices, a kitchen, a lounge area, and computer stations.
In addition to exceeding California’s energy and water usage standards, the site includes landscaping fully irrigated by onsite gray water, solar electric generation for tenant net metering, and a solar hot water system.
The creation of these 50 homes is just Phase I of the project. Phase II and III will provide more supportive services, transitional housing, a commercial kitchen, and 50 more permanent supportive homes.
Thanks to donors like you, Mercy Housing can continue to create homes like these for veterans nationwide. Thank you for giving back to those who have already given so much.
