Aug 26Majoring in Mystery: CSI here she comes!
“From a young age, I’ve been fascinated by the idea of solving mysteries and helping others find justice,” Mercy Housing resident and 2025 EPIC award recipient Shakirah recently shared.
As she grew older, Shakirah realized that her passion could turn into a meaningful career as a crime scene investigator (CSI). “Becoming a crime scene investigator combines my passion for science, attention to detail, and desire to serve the community,” she said.
Solving mysteries and advocating for justice
Shakirah is driven to gain the skills and knowledge needed to become a crime scene investigator. Her dream is to join a dedicated team that helps bring justice by uncovering the truth through forensic science.
CSI involves collecting, analyzing, and documenting physical evidence from crime scenes, from fingerprints to blood samples to clothing fibers. It also requires the ability to remain calm and focused during stressful situations.
“It’s not about solving puzzles, it’s about giving victims and their families the answers they deserve and helping law enforcement bring criminals to justice,” Shakirah explained.
Joc Wilson, Sunnydale Resource Center Manager, described Shakirah as someone who thrives in situations where many of her age would hesitate. “She is soft-spoken but never afraid to speak out when it comes to advocating for what’s right, our standing up for her community.”
Joc had the opportunity to work with Shakirah directly one summer, serving as a teen staff member. “Right away she stood out,” Joc shared, “not just for her work ethic, but for her leadership and initiative.” Shakirah jumped into activities with the younger kids without hesitation and led by example, while her “quiet confidence made a lasting impression on everyone around her.”

Shakirah knows that pursuing a career in forensic science will be challenging, but she has found support from her family and her Mercy Housing community. She notes that having a stable home has allowed her to grow, both personally and academically. “They have created a safe and encouraging environment where I’ve been able to learn the importance of setting goals and staying committed to them,” she added, adding that her confidence has grown. She now has a clear sense of direction.
Making a difference in the world
“Shakira is constantly looking for ways to better herself and to stay on a positive path,” Joc noted. “When she’s struggling, she seeks support. When she’s winning, she shares that joy. That self-awareness and resilience are what make her a standout young person.”
“Mercy Housing has done more than just give me a place to live they’ve helped me believe in my future. I am grateful for their impact on my life and the way they have supported my journey. With their help, I am confident that I can achieve my dream of making a positive difference in the world.”
