Jul 29New home for artists takes shape on Market Street
Mercy Housing California, Artists Hub on Market (AHoM), and City of San Francisco leaders celebrated the groundbreaking of Artists Hub on Market, a transformative development that will bring permanently affordable housing and dedicated arts space to the heart of San Francisco.
Located at Market and Gough streets, the project will provide 94 permanently affordable homes for artists, arts workers, and their families earning at or below 80% of Area Median Income. The development was designed to help artists remain in San Francisco while creating new opportunities to live and work in the communities they help shape.
In addition to affordable housing, Artists Hub on Market will include rehearsal and practice studios, a black box theater, office and program space for arts organizations, and community gathering spaces. Ground-floor amenities, including a café and cultural programming, will create a welcoming destination for residents and the broader community.
The project’s central location connects multiple cultural districts and places residents near transit, employment opportunities, and neighborhood resources. By combining housing with dedicated creative space, the development provides a unique model for supporting both artists and the city’s arts organizations.
The groundbreaking marked an important milestone for a project years in the making and reflects strong collaboration among community partners, arts leaders, and public agencies.
Once complete, Artists Hub on Market will offer much more than affordable housing. It will create a place where artists can live, create, collaborate, and build community, helping ensure that San Francisco remains a vibrant and accessible home for the people who make its cultural life possible.
