The power of community

When John Gordon took the stage at the groundbreaking ceremony for The Eliza earlier this year, a new permanent supportive housing community for seniors in Oakland, he spoke not only as a lifelong Oakland resident but also as an advocate for affordable housing.

Born at Highland Hospital, a graduate of Oakland High School, and now an Oakland-based artist, John has deep roots in the city. Today, he calls Hamilton Apartments home, where he has lived for several years and volunteers with Resident Services to support the community food bank program.

What John values most about living at Hamilton is the sense of community.

“Management and Resident Services provide us with recreational gatherings and events,” John shared. “They also provide free holiday meals every year.”

From cultural performances to holiday celebrations, these activities have helped create meaningful connections among residents. John recalled an African dance performance and a holiday blues concert in the community room that brought neighbors together and created lasting memories.

Standing at the podium on the future site of The Eliza, John expressed confidence that the same spirit of community would thrive there.

“The reason I wanted to share the good things that go on at my building is because I believe that same sense of social community can and will continue right here at the new Eliza affordable housing building,” he said.

John also spoke about the importance of expanding affordable housing in Oakland. While he appreciates the city’s growth and development, he believes affordable housing must remain a priority:

“For the homeless and low-income residents of this city,” he said, “more affordable housing means stability and hope.”

John’s remarks underscored the impact of affordable housing beyond providing a place to live. As construction on The Eliza nears the halfway point, his vision reflects the promise of communities that foster connection, support, and opportunity.
